New Buddhist school in memory of Saranankara Sangharaja

KANDY – Plans are underway to set up a Buddhist school in Kandy in memory of Ven. Weliwita Asarana Saranankara Sangharaja Thera, who initiated a Buddhist revival movement under the last Kingdom of Kandy, said Central Provincial Governor Niluka Ekanayake at Malwatte Maha Vihare on Saturday (08) afternoon.


The school will be built on a land at Peradeniya, the Governor said, adding that the project had received the consent of President Maithripala Sirisena.


The Governor made this announcement on the occasion of unveiling of the portrait of late Sangharaja Thera taken in the Sangharaja Perahera organised for the 71st year by the Ven. Aggamaha Panditha Aluthgama Sri Dhammananda Nayake Thera of Malwatta Maha Viahre.


The portrait was unveiled by Governor Niluka Ekanayake.


The Buddhist School built and named after the late Weliwita Sarankara Sangharaja Thera would be a fitting tribute to the Thera, whose strenuous efforts and dedication in reviving of the Buddha Sasana which had been on the decline, Governor Ekanayake noted.


The Governor said she would initiate a fund for holding the Sangharaja commemoration programme annually in Kandy.


The programme had been launched by Ven.Aluthgama Sri Dhammananda Nayake Thera with the support of the "Dayaka Sabha" amidst numerous difficulties, the Governor noted.


Ekanayake said that every member of the Sangha and each and every Buddhist layman should remember with gratitude the late Sangharaja Thera and King Keerthisri Rajasinghe for their tireless efforts which helped revive Buddhism in Sri Lanka.


Most Ven. Anunayake Thera of the Malwatta chapter Dr. Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Thera said that owing to the revival of Buddha Sasana in Sri Lanka initiated by the Weliwita Sangharaja Thera culture and literature had flourished in the country.


Ven. Aluthgama Sri Dhammananda Nayake Thera told the meeting that he could not hold the Sangharaja commemoration programme if not for the support of the Dayaka Sabha and philanthropists.


Some former Central Provincial Governors including late Monty Gopallawa extended support to the annual event, the prelate added.


Most Ven. Anunayake Thera of Malwatte Dimbulkumbure Wimaladamma Thera also addressed the meeting.
