Six hundred complaints against police have been received by the National Police Commission in the first six months of this year, NPC Secretary Ariyadasa Cooray said yesterday.

Secretary Cooray told The Island they had already begun probing those complaints.

Last year a total of 1,800 complaints against police had been received by the NPC and investigations into many of those complaints had already been concluded, he said.

Cooray said most of the complaints related to policemen not carrying out proper investigations into public complaints, acting partially and assaults.

Meanwhile, according to Director of Investigations of the Bribery and Corruption Commission SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri during the first half of this year five police personnel had been arrested on bribery charges, while during the whole of last year only eight policemen were arrested by them.
