Sri Lanka Cricket has sent us the following letter in response to an article in The Island on 22nd June titled "Angelo can bowl for IPL, not for Sri Lanka".

We refer to the above captioned article appearing in your newspaper of the noted instant.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes on behalf of National captain Angelo Mathews to exercise its’ right of reply as follows;

National Captain Angelo Mathews was released by Sri Lanka Cricket to participate in the Indian Premier League from 7th April to 14th May 2017, for his franchise team the Delhi Daredevils.

In keeping with his national obligations, Mathews returned to Sri Lanka on the 10th of May 2017 and led the national team in their pre-tournament High Intensity Training & Conditioning Programme at the SLC Centre of Excellence in Kandy from the 10th–14th of May.

The National skipper participated fully (as both batsman and bowler) in all training & practice sessions in the lead up to the Champions Trophy, and played as an all-rounder in the warm-up game against Scotland on the 23rd of May.

Mathews scored a comeback knock of 95 in his innings against Australia in the first official warm-up game of the Champions Trophy on the 26th of May and ended with bowling figures of 0/18.

Subsequent to the game Mathews complained of stiffness in his calf, and upon medical evaluation he was placed on a strict monitored recovery which included a medically recommended lay-off period of 7-10 days, resulting in him missing the first group stage game against South Africa. In a bid to manage the injury, a strategic decision was made to play Mathews exclusively as a batsman in the outings against India and Pakistan.

We request you to publish this response sent on behalf of National Captain Angelo Mathews in whose capabilities, dedication, commitment and leadership Sri Lanka cricket has the utmost confidence.
