A five-member committee has been appointed to probe the theft of nearly Rs. 50 million from the Postgraduate Institute of the Peradeniya University allegedly by its Senior Assistant Bursar, who has gone missing with the money.

Suspect Senior Assistant Bursar Mahesh Iddewela was interdicted by Vice Chancellor Upul Dissanayake soon after his disappearance with the cash late last month. He is believed to have fled the country.

At the time he had withdrawn the money from a state bank, claiming that he wanted to transfer it to a private bank which offered a higher interest rate.

The probe committee appointed by its Senate includes an economist, an attorney-at-law and three representatives of the university.

The VC has reported the theft to the Criminal Investigation Department.

Initially the fraud was placed at Rs 32 million, but investigations have revealed that it amounts to Rs 50 million.
