Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne yesterday denied claims by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) that he was forming a separate doctors’ union.

The union was being formed by a group of doctors entirely of their own volition. It was not the first time in the history that such a union was being formed, Minister Senaratne said.

Refuting allegations the minister said he had been invited to an event organised by the new union, which comprised a group of specialist doctors. He said he would willingly take part in any meeting organised by a trade union.

He said the union’s aim was to resolve issues which had cropped up within the medical profession. Differences of opinion among members of the GMOA had paved the way for the formation of the particular union, the Minister said.

The GMOA, during a press briefing on Monday ,accused Health Minister Senaratne of helping form a new doctors’ union.

Secretary Dr Haritha Aluthge warned the Minister that his union was prepared for any eventuality and that they would not be cowed down by such a move.
