National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) has launched a new project with UN Environment 10 Year Framework of Programmes (10 YFP) with the objective of developing a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) Database.

NCPC has said the project, ‘Promoting SCP in Sri Lanka through Facilitating Accessibility to Information,’ was intended to provide essential data to support scientific sustainability tools such as Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).

As the first step of the project, NCPC has conducted a two day Training of Trainer (ToT) programme on June 26 and 27 in Colombo. Selected 20 LCA practitioners in Sri Lanka were trained by international resource persons from Green Delta and Eco Invent. Twenty participants will then join hands with NCPC in developing LCI database for agri food sector and a Green product criteria based on the data for a selected agri food product.

NCPC has noted that Sri Lankan consumers had to face difficulty choosing a product which had the highest impact on the environment as the country lacks LCA studies and the major reason for that was the unavailability of data over the life cycle which enables carrying out LCA studies.

The same issue was the part for introducing proper Eco Label schemes for products, the centre has highlighted.
