Armed gang attacks two cops near kovil at Kopay

A gang armed with swords and clubs yesterday afternoon attacked two police constables near Nandavil Amman kovil in the Kopay area, causing injuries to them.

Police sources told The Island the victims had been inquiring into a public complaint when they came under attack.

Sources said the attackers had come on motorcycles. The wounded personnel, identified as Surendran and Dhammika, were admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. They were receiving emergency medical treatment at the time this edition went to press. Attackers had fled the area and the police were making inquiries, investigators said.

Military sources said there had been a spate of incidents in the Jaffna peninsula since the second week of July with mobs causing damage to police post, a house belonging to a policeman in Nelliady besides the killing of a police sergeant near the Nallur kovil.
