Waruna Lakshan competing in the men’s javelin throw could clear only a distance of 73.16 metres at the 2017 IAAF World Championships at the London Stadium in London on Thursday. He cleared that distance in his first attempt before failing at the next two throws in the qualifying round.

It was a disappointing performance by the athlete who had cleared 82.19 metres in April at Diyagama.

Meanwhile, Nimali Liyanarachchi who competed in the women’s 800 metres too was well below her personal best as she returned a time of just 2:08.49 seconds to finish last in her heat. Neither of them were expected to progress to the next round.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s UK based marathoner Anuradha Indrajith Cooray and US based marathoner Hiruni Wijeratne both failed to complete the men’s and women’s marathons respectively.
