UNP victims of violence to be paid compensation soon

Prisons Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Ministry yesterday said that Cabinet approval would be obtained next week to pay compensation to families of UNPers killed due to political violence.

The ministry said that 1,500 victims had been identified and the Rehabilitation Authority was in the process of making necessary arrangements to compensate them for their suffering.

The government would first provide compensation to those who had suffered due to violence that broke out in the aftermath of the assassination of People’s Alliance MP Nalanda Ellawela on Feb 11, 1997 and the victims of Anuradhapura LTTE suicide attack that claimed the lives of over 25 persons, including Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera and his wife on Oct 6, 2008.
