Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera responding to calls by Minister of Petroleum Resources Development Arjuna Ranatunga to sack Cricket Board Chief Thilanga Sumathipala, said yesterday that changes could take place only at the board’s next election.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet Press Briefing at the Information Department, Dayasiri pointed out that the Cricket Board had been run by an interim administration for eight years. Polls had been held only after the current government had come to power.

Jayasekera said he had asked for a report on the cricket teams poor performance in the recently concluded test series against India.

Sri Lanka’s best eleven had played against India, he noted, adding that they should be given all the encouragement necessary to perform well in the future.
