MR: Yahapalanaya has made A'pura farmers survive on lotus yam

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently urged the people to join hands with the Joint Opposition (JO), to protect the SLFP, which, he said, had been betrayed by a group of leaders seeking political expediency.

Rajapaksa was speaking after attending an alms giving ceremony at the residence of MP Janaka Bandara Tennakoon in Matale. The former president was taken to the MP’s residence in a colourful motorcade consisting of many cars and about 2,000 motorcycles.

The former President said the current government was in a total mess. He condemned the double standards of the government and the sale of the national assets to foreigners.

''Special commissions should be appointed to probe the sale of national assets '' Rajapaksa said, adding that the government was selling family silver and cutting down on social welfare. He said the government had reduced the farmers to penury and made them survive on nelum ala (lotus yams).

Former MP s Janaka Bandara Thennakoon, Prof. G.L.Peiris, S.M.Chandrasena, and C.B. Rathnayake also participated in the event.
