Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne has questioned the wisdom of enforcing a compulsory meditation session for the police by IGP Pujitha Jayasundera.

What if a bomb went off during the rush hour in Pettah, while the guardians of the law were engaged in meditation, Senaratne queried at a news conference in Colombo on Wednesday.

While journalists were repeatedly questioning Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera on IGP Jayasundera allegedly manhandling an employee of the Police Department for failing to participate in mandatory morning meditation session, Minister Senaratne said, "I am worried about the possibility of bomb exploding in a place like Pettah while those who should be protecting the public are meditating."

SP Gunasekera said that a closer examination of the video that had gone viral would indicate that the IGP had not manhandled the employee.

An inquiry was underway to find out as to who had leaked the video, Gunasekera added.
