Military intelligence operative caught smuggling gold

Jewellery taken into custody


An operative of the Directorate of Military Intelligence unit at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was arrested while attempting to smuggle out gold worth Rs 9.1 million yesterday, customs sources said.


Customs sources said the suspect had been caught with two kilos of gold jewellery concealed in his knee guard valued at Rs. 9,148,815 while attempting to leave the arrival area of BIA.


The gold jewellery in question has been brought by a passenger who arrived from Singapore at 9.15 pm Thursday night and he had since gone missing, sources said.
