STF catches wanted man running lodge

By Anton Fernando

A team of police commandos attached to the Special Task Force headquarters had caught a notorious suspect wanted for a series of crimes at Ingiriya and surrounding areas at a lodge in Koshena in Handapangoda along with fire arms and ammunition on Friday night, STF sources said.

The suspect had been running the lodge and used the place as a safe house for those involved in various crimes. The police had received information that the suspect had been involved in providing weapons needed by underworld elements.

When the STF personnel raided the place the suspect had tried to shoot, but he was forced to surrender with a 9 MM pistol and a magazine containing ten bullets.

A subsequent search yielded two swords, a locally made hand gun and several rounds of ammunition meant for 9 MM pistols.

The STF men handed over the suspect to the Crime Prevention Division of police for legal action.

The raid had been carried out on the instructions of STF Commandant Senior DIG M. R. Lateef.
