JO wants time to study serious discrepancies in draft constitutional proposals

Alleging what they termed serious discrepancies, the JO yesterday sought time to thoroughly examine Steering Committee’s interim drafts containing constitutional proposals in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

JO parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardena, MP told The Island that he along with MP Prasanna Ranatunga made representations on behalf of the JO at Steering Committee meeting chaired by Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday.

Gunawardena said that the decision to replace the word ‘unitary’ with ‘ekeeya’ in English draft wasn’t acceptable. The veteran politician said that the Tamil word for ‘unitary’ in 1978 Constitution, too, had been replaced in a bid to give a different interpretation.

They would pursue the matter with the Steering Committee in a bid to make the necessary changes, he said. (SF)
