13 schoolchildren, driver hurt as jam-packed trishaw crashes into rear of tipper truck

A trishaw carrying 13 schoolchildren collided with a tipper truck in Elpitiya on Thursday, seriously injuring nine of them. The driver of the trishaw was also among the injured.

The condition of the injured was serious, hospital sources said.

Elpitiya Headquarters Inspector B. L. Ajith Prasanna said the trishaw driver had planned to transport 15 children to their homes after school but two students had declined to get in as there was no room. The trishaw had lost control owing to the excessive load and crashed into the rear of a moving tipper truck at Walahena on the Avittahawa- Elpitiya road, he said.

Four students and the three-wheeler driver had been transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital as their condition was critical, police said.

The students, aged between 7 and 14, were residents of Katapala, Ganegoda and Awiththawa. They attend Ganegoda Maha Vidyalaya as well as several other schools in the Elpitiya area.
