Alleging Kiriella’s aide threatened top election officials stage protest

Several hundreds of employees of the National Election Commission countrywide held demonstrations yesterday in protest against a coordinating secretary of Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella threatening the Kandy District Deputy Commissioner of Elections, Namal Thalangama. 


Minister Kiriella’s coordinating secretary Waruna Liyanage, who was earlier a UNP member of the Kandy Municipal Council, is alleged to have threatened the Deputy Commissioner of Election Thalangama in the latter’s office. He was angry because his sister’s name had not been included in the electoral register.


All workers of the National Election Commission wearing black arm bands since Monday (09) in protest against the incident.


Yesterday’s protest was held at Yatinuwara Veediya in front of the Kandy District Secretariat, which h ouses the District Election Office.


Election Commission’s employees of districts from Jaffna to Hambantota and Trincomalee to Colombo joined the protest.
