The United National Party yesterday filed two Writ Applications in the Court of Appeal over the rejection of the party’s nomination papers for the March 17 local government elections. The applications were against the decisions of the Returning Officers for the Embilipitiya Town Council and the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha respectively. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, filing the application against the rejection of the party’s list for the Embilipitiya TC polls, requested the Court to squash the decision of the Returning Officer, who had claimed that the name of a youth candidate had not been properly written in an affidavit.

The petitioner said that the aforesaid decision of the Returning Officer was arbitrary, mala-fide and should be quashed by the Court. The Commissioner of Elections has been cited as the first respondent and the Returning Officer the second.

In the application challenging the rejection of the Party’s nominations list for the Homagama Pradesiya Sabha, Attanayake prayed Court to squash the decision of the Returning Officer, who had claimed that there was a shortcoming in stating the age of a youth candidate in the list, an allegation which the UNP denied.
