Heavy rains of above 150 mm will be expected in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, North Western, Uva, Northern and North Central provinces and in Ampara and Batticaloa today, according to the Meteorology Department.

The Met Department has predicted that the prevailing showery conditions due to the low level atmospheric disturbance over Sri Lanka will continue and, therefore, cloudy skies would be expected over most parts of the country.

The department has said showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the country and the possibility for very heavy showers was high in the hilly areas.

Heavy rains (above 100 mm) within 24hrs could be expected at some places elsewhere.

The Met Department has requested the public to take precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning.

During the last 24 hours ended at 08.30am yesterday, the maximum rainfall was recorded from Kirindiwela.

A weather advisory issued by the Early Warning Centre of the Meteorology Department states that due to the active cloudiness in the Western and North-western sea areas temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and very rough seas could be expected off the coast extending from Galle to Kankasanturai via Puttalam and Mannar.

The sea in other areas may also be very rough during thunder showers and the naval and fishing communities have been requested to remain vigilant.

According to Disaster Management Coordinating Unit District Assistant Director I. A. K. Ranaweera, 394 people belonging to 73 families in Kandy have been affected by the heavy rains.

Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili told The Island that majority of the districts affected by the severe drought condition were currently receiving heavy rains.

According to the latest Disaster Situation Report, 1,665,944 people belonging to 488,272 families have been affected by at least some sort of a disaster triggered by either drought or heavy rains in the country.
