The JVP yesterday accused Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha of stirring up communalism.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath, participating in the third reading stage debate on budget 2018,said that Musthapha’s promises shouldn’t be taken seriously.

The JVP MP, participating in the debate of Expenditure Heads of Public Administration Management, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government ministries, raised concerns about people in Sainthamaradu demanding a separate Pradeshiya Sabha for their area. At present Sainthamaradu is part of Kalmunai Municipal Council.

Herath said: "This Sainthamaradu Pradeshiya Sabha issue was created by this government. As the minister, you gave those people a promise that you would establish a separate PS for them on October 21, 2016. The Prime Minister also said the same thing in 2015. Rauff Hakeem and Rishad Bathiudeen also gave the same promise. Now, you keep saying that you cannot deliver the promise. Therefore, you should take the responsibility for creating a new problem which was not there in the first place."

Musthapha said he was holding discussions with all the relevant parties such as Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Muslim parties representing the Eastern province. "I promise you today to provide a solution for this issue which is favourable to both Tamil and Muslim communities," he said.

Herath said the promises given by Musthapha should not be taken seriously. "The minister gave several promises to hold the Local Government elections during the last two years.

Musthapha said, "I did everything to protect parties like the JVP through the Local Government Act. That is why your party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake thanked me."
