The Freshwater Fisher Information System - ‘Infish’, the first of its kind in Asia, was launched by Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) in Battaramulla on Wednesday (06).

Under this system, all data of the fisher community, daily fish harvest from inland reservoirs, fish caught by each boat and their income as well as savings would be recorded, the Fisheries Ministry said.

The main objective of the system was to uplift the living standards of the fishermen and their families through a proper management of freshwater fishing resources, the Minister said.

The system would cover 45 reservoirs under the first stage of the project and the rest would be installed at the end of 2018. There were about 10,000 freshwater fish reservoirs in the country, the Minister added.

In addition, tab computers had been distributed among fishing unions and a special app had been designed for the system, he said.

Amaraweera claimed that during the past two years the monthly income of freshwater fishermen had increased to about Rs. 100,000 per month.
