Around 60,000 acres of paddy fields in Elahera, Minneriya, Girithale, Kavudulla in the Polonnaruwa District cannot be cultivated due to lack of water, farmers complain.

Farmers said the irrigation officials had not announced a date on which cultivations could begin.

They been asked at the District Agriculture Committee meetings to prepare the land for cultivation of paddy with rain water till the Irrigation Department released the waters stored in tanks, farmers said.

Many farmers had prepared their fields following the recent rains but they could proceed as the irrigation department has failed to release tank water for the next stage of cultivation, they said.

Contacted for comment, Polonnaruwa Zone Director of Irrigation, S. K. Hewage said they had not yet decided when to release waster to the fields in Elahera, Minneriya, Giritale and Kavudulla areas.

Hewage said the tanks had not received sufficient water to be released for cultivation purposes.

About 16,000 acres paddy land received water from the Elahera tank, 28,000 acres from the Minneriya reservoir, 13,000 acres from the Kavudulla reservoir and 7,500 acres from the Girithale reservoir, Hewage said.
