East and West enter wedded bliss

A week before Anjalika Samarasekera, daughter of Harindra and Indira Samarasekera was married in church in faraway Toranto, Canada to Hugh Rogers, son of Jane and Doug Rogers immediately after which they flew to Sri Lanka. The poruwa ceremony took place at Blue Waters in Wadduwa as the sun dipped into the Indian ocean to the throbbing of drums in the presence of close friends and relations with the High Commissioner of Canada His Excellency Bruce Levy, in Sri Lanka and his wife Ingrid Knusun gracing the occasion. As the sun went down the couple stepped of the poruwa after the many traditions were performed including the Jayamangala Gathas sung by a trio of girls clad in white Kandyan half sarees, which was an idealshootout for the many foreign guests to cover.

The bride was of picture book beauty in an ivory organza saree worked in a border in silver and gold jeek and leasab mingled with sequins, stones and beads in subdued elgance, with a blouse which also had border at the ege of the sleeve, over a raw silk foundation. Only flowers adorned her head which had a french pleat hairstyle and she carried a spray of orchids; rose buds and star flowers. Her jewellery was in an antique gold.

The tall and handsome groom looked dapper in his formal painstriped dark suit, he wore with a formal white shirt and a red tie with a subtle pattern on it.

Mother of the bride Indira had her grape purple saree of Mysore chiffon woven and bordered in subdued gold and silver she wore with a gold coin necklace and diamond earings. There were many of her friends from her youth and days in Sri Lanka among them Nirmala Wickremasinghe in a cerise an black saree.

Whose bridesmaid Indira was Anila Bandaranaike, in a chillie red Indian silk with womven borders and hedpiece in typical orissa weave, and Sharmini Wettumuni also in a red saree.

From father Harindra’s side were his three sisters Nirmal Perera in a green saree she wore with a striking triple strand large green stone studded necklace with husband Bradman. Also from Canada were her two grand daughters Natalie and Kateland. Anthonis and grandson. Sister Sriyanthi Induruwana was with her daughter Natasha and the youngest of the female siblings Niranjala Sirisena with family of son Asanga and daughter.

Pushpanjalie Ranaweera in a grey and fuschia print bordered in f grey sequins. Among the other family members were Hadindra’s eldest brother Jayantha his wife Asoka and sons Dilshan and daughter Anoma Rodrigo. Also there to join in dining, wining and dancing was Rohini Cooray with husband Neville and son Anil with wife Tanya and daughter Anya home on holiday from the States with two of her mates from University. It was an informal affair with everyone having a good time, memories of which the handsome couple will take home with them on their return to Canada.
