University trade unions to strike over broken promises

By Nilantha Madurawala

The Inter-University Trade Unions Joint Committee has decided to resort to trade union action as the authorities had failed to meet their demands.

A spokesman for the Committee said last year Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella had reneged on a promise to pay the non-academic staff an enhanced allowance.

Chairman of the Joint Committee Edward Malwattege said that when allowances were increased the UGC had said they would be granted to both academic and non-academic staff, but that pledge had not been honoured.

He said that an assurance that the academic staff would be given a salary increment for proficiency in English, too, had not been fulfill;ed.

Malwattage said several rounds of discussions had been held with UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan de Silva as well, but to no avail.

Hence, the workers were left with no alternative but to resor to trade union action, he said.
