Romania expands collaboration with Sri Lanka in banking finance sectors

Romania , which assumes Presidency of the European Union in January 2019, has decided to expand collaboration with Sri Lanka, in the banking and finance sectors, among many other areas.


Talks commenced when Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Dr. Mugur Isarescu paid an official visit to Colombo last year, Romania’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Dr Victor Chiujdea said yesterday.


He said that during the visit of State Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake to Romania for bilateral political consultations last year, the two sides had reviewed cooperation in political, economic, cultural, labour and educational spheres. "The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in the finance and banking, energy, rural development, agriculture, health, tourism, education and labour sectors."


While the two countries were celebrating the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, it was heartening to see an increase in the the number of Romanian tourists visiting Sri Lanka, considered one of the best destinations in this part of the world, the Ambassador noted, adding that a Parliamentary Friendship Association had also been established for the first time.


He said that Romania would assume Presidency of the European Union in January 2019. "We are on schedule with all components, for assuming the leadership role."
