Fertiliser shortage : Pakistan sends 41,000 metric tonnes

A consignment of 41,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser purchased from Pakistan to tide over the current shortage of fertiliser was scheduled to reach Colombo late last night , Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said yesterday.


He told the Post Cabinet Press Conference at the Information Department, that Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, on being informed over the telephone by President Maithripala Sirisena of the need for urgent fertiliser supplies, had responded immediately.


Pakistan had also agreed to send a further shipment of 75,000 tonnes of fertiliser shortly, the Minister added.


He said that immediately after the fertiliser stocks were cleared from the Port, they wold be dispatched to areas which were experiencing shortages.
