Speaker Karu Jayasuriya’s Office yesterday said that as Parliament could only be reconvened by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in terms of Standing Orders No 14, MP Dinesh Gunawardena’s request for a special session had been brought to the PM’s notice.

A spokesperson for the Speaker’s Office said that PM Wickremesinghe would decide on MP Gunawardena’s request.

An aide to MP Gunawardena, who is also the parliamentary group leader of the Joint Opposition MPs, told The Island that the MEP leader wanted parliament reconvened to discuss rapidly deteriorating economic situation.

Parliament last met on Dec 11. Speaker Jayasuriya announced parliament would meet again on January 23.
