LG Elections : Too early to predict ‘Mahinda’s Party’ performance - Ranil

by Zacki Jabbar

Since the local government election campaign proper has not started, it is too early to predict how the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) would perform, says Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Asked if he could predict the fortunes of the SLPP, widely regarded as a party established by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister said on Tuesday "Let’s wait and see. It’s a bit too early to comment on that."

Mahinda still remains a joint patron of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) along with Ex President Chandrika Kumaratunga even though he, on Tuesday, urged people to vote for the SLPP and not the SLFP, at the forthcoming local government polls.

Echoing similar views were Regional Development Minister Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka and former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

Fonseka said that the SLPP would be able to win in certain areas, but it would not be possible to mention numbers at this stage.

Karunanayake also said that one would have to wait till the campaign proper commenced, to gauge the SLPP’s standing. " The only thing certain is that the UNP will emerge victorious with a big margin."
