Kingswood, St. John’s, Jaffna in close contest

Special Sport Corr. in Kandy

If anything, the Jaffna Johnians had a slight edge over Kingswood after day one of their match at Peradeniya.

Left-arm spinner Sutheeshan (3-12) and Abinash (2-19) were responsible for keeping the home batters in check. Wijenarayana top-scored with 36, while Gamage made 25, the next highest.

However, the St. John’s batsmen were not given too many easy pickings. Left-handed opener C. P. Thanujan bore the brunt of the attack and battled attractively for his 46 - the day’s top score. Abinash and Jathushan gave him some support with tidy knocks.

Left-arm pacie Anul Seneviratne took two wickets on debut.

St. John’s, Jaffna 89-5 in 38 overs (C.P. Thanujan 46, N. Abinash 22, V. Jathushan 17; A. Seneviratne 2-33).

Anthonians set to overpower Dharmaraja

Special Sports Corr. in Kandy

Having bowled out the Rajans for a mediocre 118, the Anthonians, led by left-hander Theeksha Gunasinghe (101 with 12 fours and 2 sixes) made merry with the bat at Katugastota yesterday.

The Rajans had been reduced to 60-8, before a brave partnership of 58 for the ninth wicket between Isuru Dayananda and Dhanuka Ratnayake enabled them to top three figures. Dayananda’s 53 contained six fours and consumed 173 balls. He showed guts and courage.

Gunasinghe, who had been threatening a big score, finally made it with a stylish unbeaten century. Pacie Navodya Vijayakumar hit a 48-ball 74, with 11 fours and two sixes. He had earlier bagged 6-43.

Unless the Rajans pull a rabbit out of the hat, the home team should score their fifth win.

Dharmaraja 118 in 69.1 overs (Isuru Dayananda 53, Dhanuka Ratnayake 17 n.o.; Janidu Hinsara 2-7, Navodaya Vijayakumar 6-43)

St. Anthony’s 230-4 in 35 overs (Dion Stouter 44, Theeksha Gunasinghe 101 n.o., Navodya Vijayakumar 74; Upendra Warnakulasuriya 2-37).
