Ministers representing both the UNP and the SLFP were duty bound to protect the government, the President and the Prime Minister and they had to sink their difference, for the benefit of people who had voted for good governance programme, Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne said.

Addressing a UNP rally in Beruwala on Saturday, the Minister said: "We risked our lives to form this government. Those who joined us subsequently are now enjoying privileges and they had better do everything in their power to protect this government for the sake of the country.

"When we asked people to vote for us they did so endorsing our good governance programme. Therefore, the ministers have to back this government to the hilt and help it carry out its programme, We should protect both the President and the Prime Minister. They have given use freedom to work for the benefit of the people. The ministers should not abuse that freedom.

"We never lie to people when we seek their votes. We never did so and never shall. The Opposition parties spread lies and try to win by taking the people for a ride. If you need an example look at the independent group contesting from Beruwala. Those coming from the independent group are supporters of the former Defence Secretary. They did nothing for Beruwala. The former Defence Secretary provided STF protection for his cronies in the Pradeshiya Sabha. When and where have you heard of giving STF protection to PS members? Those are the very ones, who attacked former President Chandrika Kumaratunga while she was dining after attending a rally at Beruwala during the presidential election campaign. One will not hit even an animal while it is eating.

"We call upon people to vote for the elephant symbol and ensure the victory of UNP in Beruwala."

UNP Beruwala Organiser Iftikar Jameel also addressed the rally.
