The JVP says that President Maithripala Sirisena should resign immediately if he admits he does not know what has happened to the country’s economy during the last three years.

Addressing a press conference held at the Party headquarters in Pelawatte, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said: "The President ruled this country for three years. It was he who appointed the members of the Cabinet. He is the head of the Cabinet. Doesn’t he know the decisions made by the Cabinet with regard to the economy of the country during the last three years under his watch?

The President should take the responsibility for all decisions made by this government during the last three years. He can say anything on stage to play to the gallery, but the truth is that President Sirisena ruled this country together with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. SLFP ministers account for one half of the Cabinet members. If he now says that he doesn’t know what the UNP did to the economy during the last three years, the President should resign from his post immediately.

"The President is now charging that the UNP has ruined the country’s economy, but he allowed them to do so for three years. The President on Saturday in Kegalle announced that he would take control of the country’s economy from the UNP. President Sirisena said he would manage the economy through a special economic council headed by him. Whom is he trying to fool? People of this country have not forgotten what happened during the past three years though the. He cannot wash his hands of the current economic crisis.

General Secretary of Ceylon Teacher Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe and General Secretary of Public Services United Management Assistants’ Union U. Palihawadana also addressed the media.
