Vidyartha’s Dinesh Kavishka and Visakha’s Hansani Piumila won the awards for the Most Outstanding Players at the Junior National Table Tennis Championships worked off at the Kandy Municipal Council Indoor Stadium.

Kavishka, together with fellow Vidyartha players Udaya Ranasinghe, Prasad de Silva and Krishan Wickremaratne have been dominating their age-group events even at National level. Kavishka’s strong-point is that he produces different serves with the same action. He uses the serve to set up his attack.

Kavishka escaped by the skin of his teeth in his quarter final against Dharmasoka’s Isuru Anjana. The latter was leading 2 sets to 1 and at match-point in the fourth, when Kavishka launched his fight back and won in five sets.

Piumila employs back hand top spin on both flanks, which is something a bit rare. She missed a double, when she and her partner were beaten in a five set Girls Doubles final.

Tiny Bimandu Bandara of Hillwood won two titles. The Under 12 event was won with ease, while Bimandu and Chandupa Alahakoon claimed the Under 18 Mixed Doubles title in a thrilling four setter.

Senura Silva, who is the son of former champions Indika Prasad and Deepika Rodrigo, played intelligently to win the Under 12 event. Senura’s strong point is that he is able to vary his game according to his opponent’s play. His opponent in the final, Akesh Dimantha of Vidyartha gave him a good run. However, the latter’s lack of variety in the serve cost him dear.

Dimantha overcame the bottom seed Harindu Rodrigo to enter the final.

This Indoor facility is a very good one and a boon to table tennis players and fans in Kandy. However, the charge of Rs. 45,000 per day should be reviewed by the KMC.

Furthermore, parking charges have also to be paid.
