Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare and Kandyan Heritage S. B. Dissanayake called on the general public not to vote for any party or candidate promoting communal disharmony.

Addressing a SLFP election rally in Samanthurai last week (25), the Minister said: There are some parties and candidates who try to win by using the racial card. We all have experienced the results of such politics by politicians after independence. Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim all suffered because of falling for the politicians who secured power by playing the racial cards. Thousands of people lost their lives and many others were disabled because of the conflict that resulted from propagation of ethnic politics. The Feb 10 LG elections will provide us with an opportunity show the world that we have learnt lessons from past mistakes and are promoting ethnic harmony.

"If we fall prey again for the tactics of politicians seeking your votes by instigating your communal feelings, our children who would pay the price. We know that some Muslim parties spread extremist ideas and ask the votes of the Eastern Province Muslims to vote for only Muslim parties. To get elected, they may play the race card and foster polarization. The TNA and Rishard Bathiudeen’s parties are notorious for inciting communal hatred in order to garner votes. You should shun racial politics by rejecting them."
