The Epidemiology Unit yesterday said that 7356 dengue cases had been reported from the beginning of January to 5 February, 2018.

The Unit website has recorded 1,292 cases in the Colombo District by the first week of this month. Of them 410 were from the Colombo City. Last year the Unit recorded 2,734 cases in the Colombo District in January.

The other districts which recorded considerably large number of cases were Gampaha (627), Batticaloa (558), Kurunegala (537), Jaffna (551), Puttalam 479) Kandy (478), Kalmunai (451) and Kalutara (354).

However, efforts by The Island to ascertain the number of dengue deaths failed as the two officials in charge at the dengue Control Unit were not available for comment.

However an official of the Unit said that the number of dengue deaths were not beneficial to the public although it is a known fact that one reason for the public to be more conscious of the seriousness of the disease was knowing the number of lives the dengue mosquito had claimed.

The number of dengue cases in the country topped 185,680 by December 31 claiming over 300 lives. In Colombo alone the year end figure reached 34,274.
