The leader of Joint Opposition (JO) in Parliament and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday said the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) was confident of winning the Local Government elections on Saturday (10).

Addressing the SLPP’s last media briefing before the election at Kingsbury Hotel, MP Gunawardena said Saturday’s election would showcase the SLPP winning as a referendum on the present corrupted government, and the victory would be a fitting answer to all who had blamed the Rajapaksa government for the economic mess.

The media briefing was attended by MP Keheliya Rambukwella, MP Udaya Gammanpila, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, Gevindu Kumaratunga, fomer Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabral, MP Bandula Gunawardena, former MP Baddegama Samitha Thera and Sabaragamuwa Univesrity Senior Lecturer Mahinda Pathirana.

Speaking at the briefing MP Rambukwella said the election was not called by the government but it was forcefully taken by the opposition as the government had postponed it for two and half years as they feared to defeat.

MP Gammanpila said the people should not vote just thinking about the people at village level but should think about the issues that the country was facing at this point.

"The victory of SLPP in LG polls now seems certain," Gammanpila added.

Dr. Aamarasekara said the SLPP was the only party which would be able to save the country from the present trap and therefore requested the public to vote for SLPP for a better Sri Lanka.
