Subramanian Swamy wants Rajapaksa to return to power

Indian politician, Subramanian Swamy who was associated with the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration, has Tweeted yesterday hat he hopes that Rajapaksa would return to power soon, after the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP) strong showing at the February 10 local government election.

"It is good to hear that Rajapaksa is making a strong comeback to Sri lankan politics. He should become President soon," he Tweeted. However the 19th amendment to the constitution prevents Mahinda Rajapaksa from contesting again as President.

Also commenting on Mahinda Rajapaksa’s close ties with China and his supposed anti India stance, he said India ‘must know how to deal and persuade. In foreign policy nothing is ready made or baked for you."

Swamy was a regular visitor to Sri Lanka during the tenure of Mahinda Rajapaksa and was a speaker at a number of events in Colombo. Swamy also attempted to broker a settlement regarding the Indian fishermen issue with Sri Lanka saying that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa must meet Mahinda Rajapaksa for discussions. In 2014 he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the Republic of India, on Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa under whose leadership the LTTE was eliminated.
