Nawalapitiya hotbed of polls violence

Polls Monitor, People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) said yesterday they had witnessed a number of incidents of post election violence in Nawalapitiya in the recent past.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters have threatened their opponents. "Meanwhile, the SLPP candidate, AAG Rohana Bandara and his supporters travelled around in a vehicle parade to celebrate his victory; this is a violation of election laws and the Police have specifiably said that no one should hold rallies in the post-election period," Executive Director for PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said.

Several incidents of violence had been reported from the Gampaha District as well, he said. Hettiarachchi urged candidates and their supporters not to violate election laws when celebrating victory.

"It is only a small group of candidates who are violating election laws and the party leaders must take steps to ensure that this small number adheres to election laws," he said. (RK)
