SLFP–UNP committee to decide fate of unity govt.

A committee comprising UNP and SLFP members would be appointed during today’s Cabinet meeting to decide on the future of the national unity government, sources close to the President told The Island yesterday.

"The SLFP group will also meet after the Cabinet meeting," the source said, adding that a group of SLFP Ministers has sought President Sirisena’s permission to form a government with the UNP. The group was led by a minister and high ranking SLFP official close to the President. In response an irate President had told then ‘onnam yanna’ (leave if you want to), sources said.

Around the same time a group of SLFP ministers who met at the residence of Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera decided that the SLFP could form a government of its own. This decision has also been conveyed to the President.

"Obviously, this is a very confusing situation and it was decided last night to appoint a committee to look into this matter at today’s Cabinet meeting. The SLFP parliamentary group will also meet after the Cabinet," sources said.

Meanwhile the UNP backbenchers are pressuring Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to break ranks with the SLFP and form a UNP government. Asked for comment one of the MPs said they were confident of securing the support of at least 10 UPFA MPs.
