The concept of National Government canno’t be abandoned, since the people had given both the UNP and SLFP a mandate for that purpose, Tourism Minister John Ameratunga said last night, while talks on the issue, between the two sides were in progress in Colombo.

President Maithripala Sirisena , Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe , many Ministers and parliamentarians were in discussion, at the time this edition went to press, to decide on the best arrangement to govern the country, until the next General Election , which was due in August 2020.

Asked about comments made by some senior members of the SLFP, that they would not serve in an administration headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and would form their own Government, Amerataunga said " All nonsense . It is the UNP which can form a government and not them . But, we don’t want to change the five year mandate, that the people bestowed on us in August 2015."

The Minister emphasised that it was only through a Unity Government that the country could achieve stability , peace and prosperity, since all other arrangements since independence had failed.
