Injured Gunaratne returns home

Asela Gunaratne

All-rounder Asela Gunaratne’s bad luck with injuries continued as the 32-year-old was forced to return home after hurting his right arm during training ahead of the first T-20 International against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka Cricket in a statement said that Gunaratne hurt his arm during fielding drills on Tuesday. He has returned home after being ruled out of both T-20s.

He was expected to get an MRI scan and start his rehabilitation process.

In July last year, Gunaratne had fractured his left thumb while attempting a catch during the opening Test match against India in Galle. The injury ruled him out of action for six months and he made a return during the limited overs series in India.

He was not considered for the two-match Test series in Bangladesh as middle-order batsman Roshen Silva was preferred over him.

SLC announced that there will be no replacement for Gunaratne for the T-20 series.

Sri Lanka have a long injury list with captain Angelo Mathews, top-order batsman Kusal Perera and fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep unavailable due to various niggles and injuries.
