The Batticaloa District is considered the ‘worst’ blood donor community in the country. Director of the National Blood Transfusion Services Dr Rukshan Bellana took a team to the province and inspected the blood centres mainly at the  Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, Kattankudi Base Hospital and Kaluwanchikudi Base Hospital within the past three days.

Speaking to the people and community and religious leaders Dr Bellana emphasised the importance of donating blood as it was very essential to keep the healthcare services going. Accidents and trauma patients, patients undergoing surgeries, cancer cases and children suffering from Thalassemia were in need of blood, he pointed out.

During the recent past the country had experienced some difficulties in collecting blood from the general public, Dr. Bellana said. "Therefore the NBTS launched a campaign recently to heighten people’s awareness of the need to donate blood through promotional campaigns.

Kattankudy community yesterday recorded the highest ever blood collection in the whole region with 600 donors within a few hours. NBTS thanked the hospital medical superintendent Dr Mohamed Jabir for his excellent organisational skills and leadership in making the campaign a huge success.

Dr Bellana also thanked the senior consultant of Classic Travels Rizwan Hafiz for having helped make the event a success.
