By Saman Indrajith

Chief Government Whip Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka yesterday (08) said in parliament that the government was holding discussions with banks regarding granting loans to movie theatre owners to facilitate them to transform them into digital ones.

Answering a question raised by JVP Kalutara District MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister Karunathilaka said that 117 theatres out of the total number of movie theatres in the country, should be transformed into digital medium.

He said: "Currently, 173 movie theatres operate in the country. Out of them 117 halls should be modified with digital technology. For each such modifications, around Rs. 7 million have to be spent. It is theatre owners who should bear the cost. Therefore, the National Film Corporation is holding discussions with banks regarding the possibility of granting loan facilities to theatre owners".

"Global cinema industry now uses the latest technology. But in our country the situation is entirely different. In order to adopt trends in global cinema industry, we also should use digital technology in our theatres," Karunathilaka said.
