KANDY – Public Enterprise and Kandy Development Minister and Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said at Galagedara on Wednesday that the recent violence in Kandy area had been unleashed by unruly elements from outside and not by the people of the area.

Minister Kiriella said the police had been aware of it but they had not taken any action.

Minister Kiriella was speaking after opening the refurbished building of the Galagedara branch of the Bank of Ceylon on Wednesday (07).

Kiriella pleaded with the Maha Sangha to intervene to protect the pride and dignity of the Sri Lankan nation.

The majority community should protect the minorities and that the honour and dignity of the majority community depended on how it looked after the minority communities, the Minister pointed out.

Kiriella said any incident that took place in a country was known to the entire world in next to no time. Sri Lanka’s image had been tarnished and that was something the country could not afford.

"Our country needs foreign assistance for development and in this context peace and amity in the country are of paramount importance," Kiriella said.

Minister Kiriella commended the services and the progress of the Bank of Ceylon.
