Joint Opposition Parliamentary Group Leader MP Dinesh Gunawardena Wednesday (07) said that though a decision should be taken before 31 March by Parliament, on holding elections to three Provincial Councils which were currently under Governors, the government was yet to make an announcement.

Gunawardena said that according to the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act, a decision about holding elections for PCs which were under Governors had to be taken by Parliament before the end of this month. But, Parliament was yet to take a decision because the government had not made any announcement thus far, he said.

"We passed the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act. According to the Act, the Delimitation Committee should submit a report to the minister and the minister should submit it to Parliament within two weeks. Furthermore, the Act says that the parliament should take a decision on holding elections for PCs that operate under Governors before the end of March. But today is 07 March and the report was submitted to Parliament on 06 March," he said.

Gunawardena said that Parliament only had three weeks to take a decision on holding debates of the said PCs. "Therefore, I would like to ask the government how it proposed to make this decision. Are they going to take that decision according to the recently passed Act or are they planning to introduce Amendments to the Act again?"

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya instructed Gunawardena to direct the question to Minister Faiszer Musthapha.  "I understand the importance of the question MP Gunawardena just raised. Therefore, I request him to direct the question to the minister. I will see if we can get an answer from him by tomorrow."
