The government said yesterday that the murder of one person and arson attacks on some shops and houses in Teldeniya, Kandy since Sunday, after a lorry driver was killed recently over an accident involving two vehicles, had been orchestrated by members of a political party.

The culprits, who included two parliamentarians, two local councillors and a Buddhist monk  had been identified and would be arrested, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said, adding that there was an organised attempt to antagonise religous minorities against the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration, since it was their votes that made the difference between victory and defeat, at the last Presidential and General Elections.

He noted that recent  remarks by some opposition politicians to the effect that they would somehow obtain the support of religious minorities at the next election, had been taken seriously and measures were being implemented to ensure that law and order prevailed.

The Muslims had made a huge contribution to ensure the security of the nation and it should be remembered and reciprocated with gratitude, Senaratne emphasised.

He said that allegations of police inaction, while armed mobs had gone on the rampage, destroying life and property belonging to Muslims was also being investigated.
