President Maithripala Sirisena decided to lift the curfew imposed in the Kandy administrative district from 10 am to 6 pm yesterday to allow residents of the area to procure food and other essentials.

The curfew was imposed on Wednesday around 12.30 pm and many people did not have time to stock up daily necessities. After receiving instructions from the President, his Secretary Austin Fernando instructed IGP Pujith Jayasundara to lift the curfew from 10 am to 6 pm.

Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera urged the public to use the time responsibly and warned that anyone who attempted to create trouble during that period would be severely dealt with.

Gunasekera said the areas affected by the communal violence the previous days had been calm during Wednesday night and Thursday night. "A large number of policemen were on the ground with military personnel. Their presence deterred most of the miscreants."

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the Naula police division, Matale. A large police contingent has been deployed around religious and public buildings in the area. Riot police squads have also been deployed, while road blocks have been put up to prevent any breach of the law.
