President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday appointed Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara the new Minister of Law and Order though some UNP ministers and civil society activist demanded that Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka be appointed to that post.

Minister Bandara, who is the Minister of Public Administration and Management, was sworn in as the new Law and Order Minister before President Sirisena yesterday. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was earlier sworn in as the Minister of Law and Order during the recent Cabinet reshuffle.

The Purawesi Balaya Organization (PBO), which demanded that Fonseka be appointed the Minister of Law and Order, said the government should have kept the position vacant instead of appointing someone to that place. Co-convenor of the organisation Gamini Viyangoda told The Island that there was someone above the Minister of Law and Order controlling his ministry Asked whether Minister Fonseka was the most suitable candidate for the position, Viyangoda said he was the among those who could take decisions without any fear or favour.
