The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka has postponed the Junior National Athletics Championship by three weeks just a day after announcing the details of the four-day event. This is due to delays in completion of the construction work at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The twice delayed championship will now be conducted from April 23 to 26 at the Sugathadasa.

"We are advised to conduct the event after the track obtains the approval of the IAAF. We have no other alternative. We will conduct the event at the Sugathadasa Stadium after the approval is given," said Palitha Fernando, the President of the AASL.

The rescheduling will affect AASL’s plan to provide nearly a month-long training to the South Asian Junior Athletics Championship hopefuls.

The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka was planing to select teams for the forthcoming South Asian Junior Athletics Championship and the Asian Junior Championships after evaluating performances of this championship.

While the AASL will host the South Asian Junior Athletics Championship at the same venue on May 5 and 6, the Asian Junior event will be held from June 4 to 8 in Japan.

The Junior National Championship was twice postponed due to delays in completion of construction work at the Sugathadasa.

The Synthetic Track at the Sugathadasa is being relayed and the authorities expect the track to be ready by April 23 for the Junior Nationals.

Meanwhile, the AASL will conduct a senior trial on April 27 and 28 at the same venue to select a pool of athletes for the Asian Games.
