Two men, who were accused of plotting to kill former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, were yesterday (27) released by Colombo High Court Judge Sampath Abeykoon who found them not guilty of the charges.

The judge found that the charges levelled against the suspects by the Attorney General were not proven beyond reasonable doubt. The suspects included the son of a former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP S. Kanagaratnam.

The two suspects, Kanagaratnam Adithyan and Kandawanam Gogulnathan, were arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) on May 13, 2009. The two men arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) were under remand custody till yesterday. The charges were filed by former Attorney General Eva Wanasundara, who is now a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
