A draft bill seeking to amend the Voluntary Social Service Organizations (Registration and Supervision) Act No.8 of 1998 had been withdrawn on the directive of Prime Minister Wickremasinghe and Minister for Co-Existence Mano Ganesan on Tuesday (27), Rohana Hettiarachchi, the Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) said yesterday.

Addressing the media at the Colombo National Library, Hettiarachchi said that the decision had been taken following a discussion between the Premier, Minister Ganesan and several civil society representatives at Temple Trees on Tuesday.

Minister Ganesan has tweeted that a committee consisting of civil society members and officials from the National Secretariat for Non Governmental Organizations will reassess the need for a new legislation.

The President of the Families of the Disappeared Brito Fernando, the National Organizer for Sarvodaya Nishantha Preethiraj, the Executive Director of Transparency International Sri Lanka Asoka Obeysekere and several other civil society representatives were present at yesterday’s media briefing.
